STRATO gives you a browser-based FTP solution in your password-protected customer service area. This allows you to login to your customer service area and directly access your webspace to upload files and edit, move and delete files and folders as necessary.
It is no longer entirely necessary to install or use an FTP program. The Web-FTP Java applet, now included in the customer service area, shares a familiar look, design and function of most popular FTP programs.
Please note however, that the STRATO Web-FTP is not a fully featured FTP client and is limited to transferring and deleting files between the "Local System" (your computer) and the "Remote System" (web space). Advanced features, such as changing of "rights" (CHMOD) are not possible within this Java applet.
To use the Web-FTP, a Java Runtime Environment must be installed on the PC/MAC, so that the necessary Java applet can be installed and used.

Login to your password-protected
customer service area. Then from the menu on the left, click on
Website Design and
Web-FTP.

When using Web-FTP for the first time and Java Runtime Environment is not yet installed on your PC, you will see a download alert.

Just click on install and follow the installation process from Sun Microsystems.
You can download the necessary software direct from Sun Microsystems for free. Please note that the download can take a few minutes.
JAVA-SOFTWARE FOR WINDOWS It is not possible to use Web-FTP without Java Runtime Environment. When Java Runtime Environment is installed and Web-FTP is opened, you will see the transfer window.

The window is divided in two, showing "Local System" (your PC) and "Remote System" (your webspace). You can now copy files or entire directories from your computer to your webspace and vice versa.

Note When you transfer files from your webspace to a public PC (E.G. in an internet cafe), they will remain saved there which could allow unauthorised people to see them.
Transfer files from your hard disk to your webspace: To upload a file from your PC to your webspace, mark the directory in the right-hand window (Webspace) where you want to upload the file to. Then select the file you want to upload in the left-hand window (local hard disk) and click on the arrow in the centre that points to the right.
To download a file to your local hard disk, follow this process in reverse.
If you click with the left mouse button on the

symbol, you can access other hard disks (Local System) and/or files (Remote System), that were recently opened.
If you click on a folder or a file name, you can then select one of the following options:
- New Dir = Create a new folder
- Rename = Rename a file or folder
- Delete = Delete a file or folder (take care when deleting folders as all contents within the folder will also be deleted)
- Refresh = Refresh folder structure
- Resume = Resume transfer of data from the PC to the webspace
Important If you use the arrows between the two windows, files with the identical name as those being uploaded will be overwritten without any warning, regardless of size or date. Clicking on the button
Resume will restart interrupted up or downloads – identically-named files will therefore not be overwritten; it will simply continue an interrupted transfer.
Note Files can be transferred as either ASCII (text) or Binary. HTML, Perl, PHP and TXT files should always be transferred as ASCII. Images, Flash, video and audio files should always be transferred as Binary.

Note
If an image on your website is not displayed properly, it is often because it was uploaded in ASCII mode. As soon as you replace it with the file in Binary mode it will be displayed correctly. Unlike other FTP programs, there is no "automatic" option.

Create a folder in your online area or on your PC To create a new folder, click on the "new" button. You can now give the folder a name.
When naming a folder, please don’t use:
- any special characters ( , / ; / & / * / etc.)
- any spaces (e.g. "my pictures")
However, you can use an underscore ( _ ) or hyphen ( - ) in a folder name.
Note For security reasons the connection to your webspace will be automatically ended after five minutes of inactivity. If this happens, you will see a message informing you.

So long as you are still logged in to your customer service area, simply click on Web-FTP again in the menu on the left to re-connect.
