How to create my own error pages

If a visitor tries to visit a page that does not exist on the server, they will receive an error message (e.g. Error 404). Under normal circumstances this is a standard message from the web server. However, with the help of our Website Configurator, you can configure your own error messages.

You can use the Website Configurator to assign individual messages for the following errors:
  • Error 401 - Password-protected access:
With the call up of protected areas. As a consequence of this error a dialogue window opens in the Browser, and queries the user data from the visitor.

  • Error 403 - Access denied:
The visitor is not permitted to see the data.

  • Error 404 - File not found:
The requested page/file does not exist on the server.

  • Error 500 - Server error:
The requested page activated an internal server error. This can occur for example with an incorrect CGI script.

Log into your password-protected Customer Area (STRATO Webhosting) and then click on the link  and .

Now click on the menu option "Your error pages"

A new window will open, with the directory listing of your webspace.

Note:
Please note that if your webspace directory contains a lot of files, it might take a little longer for this window to open.

Now select the desired directory, for which your own error pages are to be shown.
These settings for the selected directory will also affect any subdirectories, providing you input no other settings for these subdirectories

There are three options for you to configure your own individual error page:
  • Show a simple text message:
Simply enter the text that will appear unformatted in the visitor’s browser.
e.g. "Serious error. Please contact customer support."

  • Redirect to a local site:
You can redirect to another HTML page or a CGI script within your webspace. You also have the possibility to create an individual page specifically for each error.
    e.g. "/error message/404.html"

  • Redirect to an external site:
This function works the same way as the redirection to a local page.
    e.g. http://www.yourstratodomain.eu/error/message.html
  • Important:
The error 401 cannot be redirected to an external site!

Once you have made your desired selections, please click on the "save" button.

You then return to the overview where you can see which directories have been configured.
