How to set up different FTP accounts for your hosting package

In your password protected customer service area (STRATO Webhosting) you can create and administer several different FTP accounts to access the webspace for your webhosting package.

You can even allocate certain individuals or groups an FTP account to just one specific area of your webspace.

Log in to your password-protected customer service area. In the menu on the left, select and You will then see an overview of your existing FTP accounts.

Under each username, you will see the corresponding start directory.

If you would like to create a new FTP Account, please click on "Setup a new FTP account".

Click on "change" to edit the settings for an existing account.

In order to delete one or more accounts, please highlight the corresponding box and click "Delete FTP account". All of the highlighted accounts will then be deleted

Remark:
The "global" account at the top of the overview cannot be deleted.

Setting up a new FTP account

The following information is necessary:
  • Username
The username for an FTP account consists of several components.
    • Name
In order to avoid possible confusion with e-mail addresses in your package, we recommend using the prefix “ftp” for FTP accounts. The username can be freely chosen from any of the following characters: "a-z", "A-Z", "0-9" and "-".
The name must be between 1 and 30 characters long.
    • Domain
The domain forms part of the username and can be chosen from any domain or sub-domain in your webhosting package.
Although the FTP username is created with an "@" sign, setting up an FTP account will not automatically create an e-mail address.
However, if the username already exists as one of your e-mail addresses, you will be asked whether same details should be used for both the FTP account and e-mail address.

If the FTP account name already exists as an e-mail address alias, you will receive an error message, as the use of this username for an FTP account is not possible.
  • Password
Please enter a password for your account. The following characters are permitted: "a-z", "A-Z", "0-9" and "-" (Minimum 6 characters, maximum 12 characters.)

  • Please repeat the password entry, paying attention to upper and lower case letters.

  • Click on "Next" and select a relevant start directory for your new FTP account. The user will only be able to access files in this directory, including any subdirectories.

Click "Configure FTP account" to complete the process.

You will then see summary of your new FTP account, which can be printed if you wish.

Changing an existing FTP account

Click "Change" next to the relevant FTP account.

Note:
The username as well as the domain name cannot be changed. In order to change the username or domain name, you will need to create a new account. The old account can then be deleted.

As soon as the settings have been completed, you can log in to your webspace using corresponding FTP account.

Note:
You can also use "ftp.strato.com" as the host name for every FTP account. It is therefore possible to connect to your STRATO webspace, if for example, the domain has been redirected using a DSN A-Record.
