DS: How do I setup a connection to my HighEnd-/HighQ-Server via a serial (remote) connection?

What is a serial connection?

You can make a connection to your HighEnd-/HighQ-Server via the remote console even when it is being restarted. When you do this, you will be shown all the Linux messages that appear during a system restart. It is very useful to use the remote console when the operating system on your server doesn’t restart, or when you have installed (compiled) your own Kernel and if you wish to manually choose this kernel at system restart.

You can use the following steps to create a connection to the server via the remote console:

1.       Your local (or another) computer connects to the Console server.
2.       The console server then connects to the HighEnd-/HighQ-Server. This connection makes use of a serial connection to the HighEnd-/HighQ-Server.

How do I make a connection to a HighEnd-/HighQ-Server via the remote console?

If you are using PUTTY then follow the Steps in Part A).
If you are using a LINUX/UNIX-console then follow the steps in Part B).

Note:
All the commands, hostnames, usernames and passwords can be copied and pasted from one application to another, as well as, from your Windows platform to a Linux HighEnd-/HighQ-Server.

On Linux platforms characters are copied immediately they are highlighted with a mouse. As soon as the right mouse is used on Linux platforms, it is stored in the “clipboard”. Pasting the data found in the “clipboard” is not always so easy on some platforms.

Part A) Setting up a Remote console connection in PUTTY

1. Open the command window
2. Type in the following command line: {Path to putty.exe} –Ssh(consoleservernname)

You can find the console server name in your customer service area under:
“SERVER CONFIGURATION->REMOTE CONSOLE”

3. Upon connecting to the server fort he first time, you get the following message/warning:

"Are you sure you want to continue connecting (yes/no)?"
Answer with “yes”.

4.You will be asked to type in your USERNAME for logging into the remote console server. (You can find this information under: “SERVER CONFIGURATION->REMOTE CONSOLE”)

5.You will then be asked to put in the corresponding password fort his user. (You can find this information under: “SERVER CONFIGURATION->REMOTE CONSOLE”)

Now follow all the steps set out in Part C).

Part B) Setting up a remote console on a Linux/Unix system

1. Copy the ssh commando (into the clipboard) found in your password-protected, customer service area found under: “SERVER CONFIGURATION->REMOTE CONSOLE”.

2. Now paste the stored ssh command into the command line.

3. Upon connecting to the server fort he first time, you get the following message/warning:
"Are you sure you want to continue connecting (yes/no)?"
Answer with “yes”.

4. You will be asked to type in your USERNAME for logging into the remote console server. (You can find this information under: “SERVER CONFIGURATION->REMOTE CONSOLE”)

5. You will then be asked to put in the corresponding password fort his user. (You can find this information under: “SERVER CONFIGURATION->REMOTE CONSOLE”)

Now follow all the steps set out in Part C).

Part C) Logging on to the HighEnd-/HighQ-Server

The command prompt moves to the next line when you type in the password .Take note that you are not yet connected to the HighEnd-/HighQ-Server.

Type on the „Enter–key“.
The connection between your local computer, the remote console server and your HighEnd-/HighQ-Server is now setup. You should also receive the following response.
"Welcome to SuSE Linux 8.1 (i386) - Kernel 2.4.21 (ttyS0)."

You will be asked to type in your username and password for logging into your server.
Type in “root” as the user name (or another user that is on the HighEnd-/HighQ-Server) and type in the corresponding password.

 Note:
a) If the connection should close immediately after you log in, then there is probably another connection to the remote server open at that point in time.
b)
If you get the following message when trying to establish a connection, "access denied" then first of all make sure you are using the right password. If you’re still unable to establish a connection, please contact our hotline:

A note from a STRATO Customer: from Erdal Gök
If you get kicked out of the remote console and can’t seem to reconnect, it might help to deactivate the remote console in your customer service area. Let a few minutes(10-15) run -by and then reactivate it. You should then be able to connect to the remote console once again.
